DIY: Puppy Handkerchief by Marilyn

I have recently been wanting to make a puppy handkerchief for Evie to wear on our spring outings. So I created this simple double-sided triangle handkerchief for her to wear and be fashionable when we are out. I really enjoyed picking out the fabric and when I found this cute one with the puppies on it, I knew this was the right one. You are welcome to use any fabric that suits your pooch's personality. You can also manipulate the measurements if you have a larger or smaller pet. I consider to Evie to be pretty tiny, so keep that in mind. (Please read these steps from left to right then top to bottom with the written steps below).

Materials Needed:
2 pieces of 1/4 yard fabric of your choice
Fabric Pins
Fabric Chalk or Pencil
Fabric Scissors
Ruler
1 small button

Steps 1-2: Take your 1/4 yard of fabric for material you would like to be on the outside and basically cut this in half to show the part of the print you would like to be showing. Do the same with the second piece of fabric.

Steps 3-4: Pin your fabric with your fabric pins right sides of the fabric together. Grab your ruler and fabric pencil and draw a line from one edge of your rectangle to the center of the bottom. Do the same with the other side.

Steps 5-6: Pin the fabric in the center and sew down your penciled lines, but leave a tiny gap at the top center (so that you can pull your fabric through the hole). Cut the fabric about 1/4" away from your sewed lines.

Steps 7-8: Pull the fabric through the hole that you left un-sewed and iron flat. Sew a seam about 1/4" away from the edge of the fabric all the way around. This will close up the hole you left. On the left and right corner of your triangle is wear you will put the button and buttonhole. Or you can manipulate this pattern to tie the hanky or have an alternative method of closure.

Step 9: Try this on your tiny pet! And let them love life in their new handkerchief!

  1. Cute! Last time Harley had a handkerchief on he rolled it in raccoon poop. Maybe one day I'll throw him a cute one together.

    1. Thank you and Yes! You guys will have to get a puppy once you move! But be sure to get them potty trained right away or keep them off any carpet you have when you move. It will be a lifesaver when moving into a new home!
