Last month while we were visiting my grandparents and hanging out in their backyard/garden, Marilyn mentioned to my grandpa that she really liked his garden boxes and planters (not realizing that he made all of them himself). He casually said, "thank you," and the conversation went elsewhere, but my grandpa likes to surprise people. So a couple weeks later my dad came back from their house and said that grandpa has a surprise for Marilyn...you probably know where this is going.
My grandpa made us a garden box and some other fun surprises. Wahoo! This inspired our very first garden-in-a-box. The next step was deciding what to plant. We decided on planting herbs that we could use in the kitchen. This summer I have been receiving fresh herbs and vegetables from several friends who have gardens and I was inspired to grow my own from this. The three common herbs that I have been using to cook with this summer have included Parsley, Rosemary, and Basil. So it was easy to decide on what herbs to grow. Here is the process for how to plant a garden in a box of your own.
Instructions
Step 1: Gather what you will need (Gardening Box, Herbs - we purchased our starter plants at Sprouts, Gardening soil, and a spade).
Step 2: Make sure there are holes in the bottom of your garden box for water to drain, and then cover the bottom of the box with 1-2 in. of soil.
Step 3: Transfer herbs from original container to the garden box.
Step 4: Fill in all the gaps with the remaining soil and water. Enjoy the fruits (or herbs) of your labor!

Since these photos, our garden has actually been growing on its own and the basil has really gotten tall. It's amazing to see what you can bring to life if you put some effort into it!
This is awesome! I would love a garden box... currently using an antique Canada dry crate as a place to put my herb pots in.

We love gardens and flowers, we have tomatoes, strawberries and lettuces, but we don't know if we can eat them soon...

Love this, and what a sweet grandpa! :) My fiance has gotten very into container gardening -- but sadly, we have no outdoor space on which to rest plants. He's making it work with some makeshift containers in our windowsills with peppers and herbs, but eventually we'll have to find a place to transfer them. I'm thinking my parents' yard . . .
