The DIY 30 Minute Cowl

Cowls are fun little scarves that are basically a large circle and you can twist them around your neck a few times to add embellishment and a pop of color to any outfit. Cowls are great because you can make them work for any season! After seeing so many out there that are overpriced, I decided to create a quick tutorial on how you can make your own in 30 minutes.

What You'll Need: 

-2 yards of Fabric (I bought 100% cotton and also a chiffon fabric that was on sale at Hancock)

*Please also note that each 2 yards of fabric will make 2 scarfs. This will be a great opportunity to give one away! 

-Neutral Cotton Thread (to match your cowl)

-Fabric Scissors

-Sewing Machine

First, take your fabric and cut the 2 yards of fabric down the center long-ways, making it skinnier and longer in proportion.

Next fold the fabric inside-out and in half long-ways so that it is even skinnier and longer in proportion. And pin your fabric along the edge so that the edges meet each other.

Take your fabric and sew along the edge. I gave myself a 1/2 inch seam to leave room for error. But it is up to you on how much is your preference.

Once sewn, take your fabric and pull the whole thing inside-out again so that the right side is on the outside. Twist your fabric once or twice so that there will be a twist in your cowl, but also so that the seams are matching up again.

Pin your outsides together (matching the seams carefully) and sew the circle up leaving a small gap. Whip stitch up this small gap and make sure you tie-off the end so that your knot will be hidden in the cowls seam.  (If you are unsure of how to do a whip-stitch, stay tuned. And voila! You have your finished lovely cowls for the spring. The best part is that each piece of 2 yard fabric will be cut in half to 2 strips. So you can make one to share with a friend! Show your friends a little spring love with one of these fresh cowls!
