Revamp that Ole' Picture Frame

Remember that old decor that you spent hard-earned money on to decorate your college dorm because it matched everything then, but doesn't match anything in your home now? Say you are redecorating a room or your office and have been looking for the right piece, but just can't find the right color. Solution: just take something old that you have and make it new!

Here are the materials you will need:

-An old picture frame

-Acryllic Paint (color to match the theme you are aiming for; neutrals usually go well with anything; we used Apple Barrel paint from Hobby Lobby)

-Paintbrush

-Masking tape (we used scotch blue masking tape)

-Fabric (cut to the size of your frame with an extra 1 inch border all the way around; so if the picture size is 8"x10", then cut to 10"x12" using fabric scissors to lessen the chance of fraying on the edges; I chose a scrap home dec fabric from Hancock Fabrics since it would be stiffer and potentially hold up better.)

First remove your matted picture and glass from the frame. You may have to also us a screwdriver to bend back any kind of staples used to hold the matte in the frame.

Next move everything to the side and paint your frame. Normally the frame will need to have a few coats of paint so that no spots of the original color will show through.

Then take the original matted piece and lay it face down on your fabric (which should also be laying face down). If it looks like your original piece might show through the fabric, you may have to use a new piece of cardstock to mask the original piece. 

Once your matted piece is centered in the middle of your fabric piece, you can tape down the edges to the matted piece. Start with the 4 sides and wait to finish the corners last. After taping one side down, stretch the fabric to the other side and tape so that the fabric will not be loose when it's hanging. Do the same thing with the other two sides. On the corners, you can fold them and tape them down as if you are wrapping a Christmas present.

After the paint on your frame has dried and you feel that it has had enough coats of pain, you can now place your new fabric-covered piece inside the frame and hang on the wall.
