DIY: Men's Bowtie by Marilyn

On our trip to Los Angeles, we considered purchasing a bowtie for Kaleb a few times. As much as we would have loved to purchase about ten different and lovely ones we saw, we were unable to invest in that many. We also noticed that we were looking for certain styles and colors that we were unable to find. So we were inspired to create our own bowtie in the colors we felt would best fit our current wardrobe color palette. We decided to start off our first one with a mustard canvas material. We really enjoyed how it turned out and think it will flow perfectly with he grays and blues in Kaleb's wardrobe. We wanted to share with you guys so that you can also enjoy the benefits!
So first we will start off with the materials you need. We actually purchased one bowtie to use as our pattern and sizing (this is not necessary though. There are several patterns online that are also helpful). You will need at least 1/4 yard of fabric (I highly recommend choosing a stiffer fabric like canvas so that your bowtie will stay more structured). You will also need measuring tape, a needle and thread, fabric scissors, fabric marking chalk or pencil, fabric pins.
First you will lay out your fabric and lay your bowtie (folded in half) on top of the fabric (on the fold horizontally). Let the edge of your bow lay parallel with the frayed edge of the fabric. Pin your bowtie to the fabric. Use your measuring tape to mark lines 1/4"around all of the edges of your bowtie that is folded in half.

Trim out your bow tie pattern following the pencil/chalk marks so that you are leaving a 1/4" seam around your original shape. Repeat all of these steps directly above your previous cut. Do not cut off your fold yet. Pin your pieces outsides facing each other (two together and the other two together).

Sew the edges giving a 1/4" seam all the way around, but leave one open space on one of the humps of each side. Flip inside out through the space you left open in the hump. Once flipped, iron everything in place and whipstitch closed the hump for each side of your bowtie.

Last, measure the neck of the person this will be for. Make sure your bowtie will be the needed length and sew the two skinny edges together to finish up your bowtie.
