DIY: Retro Nails by Marilyn

I recently bought these fun teal and silver nail polishes by NYC and was inspired to do some nail art. I don't actually paint my nails that often, but NYC always has so many affordable, trendy colors to choose from. I've never really considered myself the type of girl who wears pink. I actually have a memory from kindergarten where the teacher went around the room asking girls what colors their rooms were. All the other little girls said 'pink' so I said 'purple' (even though it didn't become true until middle school). Needless to say I will occasionally wear pink, but usually I stick to anything else...especially for my nail color.
Materials you will need include three lovely contrasting nail polish colors, some masking tape, and scissors.
So here's how you create some awesome teal retro nails! First you will paint your base coat color on. You can choose whatever colors you think will suit your style. I happen to love bright colors, whites, and shiny things. So I felt that teal, white, and silver were appropriate.
Once your nails dry, cut your tape into rectangles (or just cut small strips) with the edges as straight as possible. Take each piece and place it diagonally from the top corner to the bottom opposite and visa versa. Do this for each nail. Then paint the top triangle with your second color. It's a sort of tedious process, but your nails will be so fun afterwards!
Once your second color is completely dry, remove the tape slowly. And repeat the last step by taping up your nails and painting the open triangle with your third color.

Your nails are now complete and now perfect for an act in an Austin Powers movie or for a night of bowling in your bellbottoms!

  2. So fun! I've tried this but the tape ruined the polish. I definitely need to wait an hour for it to dry!

  11. I´ve always admired very creative people (being not creative at all) and see what they can do with their gift. Good job on the nails and on explaining how it can be done :)
