DIY: Oven Mit by Marilyn

I really enjoy baking in the kitchen and owning fun oven mitts to pull baked goods out of the oven with. I had been saving this old button-up shirt to use on a small sewing project since I loved the pattern on the fabric so much. There ended up being the perfect amount of fabric left for me to use to make this oven mitt. This is a great way to make use of some of those old shirts or fabrics that you can't get rid (due to sentimental reasons or they are just to cute to give up).

Step 1: Gather your materials. You will need an oven mitt, 2 pieces of 1/4 yard fabric, 1/4 yard 100% cotton batting, fabric scissors, measuring tape, thread to match your fabric, fabric pins.

Steps 2-4: Place your already made oven mitt on top of the main fabric that will become the outside of your new oven mitt. Use your measuring tape to measure a 1/2" seam all the way around your oven mitt. Use your fabric pins as guidelines on the fabric. Cut out the shape of your mitt and use this as a template on your other fabric and batting to cut these shapes out as well. Pin your layers into place The 3 layers should include your outside fabrics on either side of the batting. Repeat for second side of the oven mitt.

Step 5: Sew around the edge of your oven mitt shape and repeat for your second side of your oven mitt. I also decided to 'quilt' my fabric and sew straight lines across each side of the mitt. This is optional, but gives your mitt a more home-like feel. 

Steps 6-8: Place your two sides of the oven mitt together with the outsides facing inward and sew a 1/2" seam around the edge of your mitt (except for the bottom so you can get your hand into the mitt). Once this is complete, flip inside out. This is optional, but I cut some extra of my inside fabric to sew around the opening of my oven mitt to give a nice trim. Once this is complete, you are ready to rock your new oven mitt for the fall baking season!
