DIY: Salad Tongs by Kaleb

While cleaning out one of our cupboards, I came across several kitchen utensils that we received as wedding gifts and had not yet made use of (wooden spoons in particular). It was like hitting the jackpot! I noticed that we have several wooden spoons already, so I decided to try and 'stir things up a little bit.' The inspiration for this piece comes from this wooden axe that I came across a couple weeks ago on Best Made Co. the handle of the axe was dipped in  yellow paint about half way up the shaft. the balance between rustic and clean, bright color was pretty cool. So using that same concept, I decided to tape off the dipping end and paint the handle. Below is an easy step-by-step process on how to make your own, or customize something similar. Have fun!

Supplies
Spoons (or object you'd like to paint)
Paint (I used spray paint; it gives a smoother coat)
Masking and Tape
Clips (To hang to dry your spoons)

Step 1: Gather supplies

Step 2: Mask off areas that you do not want to paint, leaving the areas you do want to paint uncovered.
Step 3: Once you have masked the areas that you wanted to, take spoons into a well ventilated area and spray a couple even coats of paint. ()

Step 4: Paint and hang to dry. After the painted surfaces are dry to touch, remove the masking and enjoy!

  2. What a fun way to brighten up to kitchen! I'm loving all these photos as well, they look great. Does the spray paint hold up okay in the dishwasher and what not?

    1. That's a great question Mollie. We might consider these as more decorative utensils that should probably only be hand-washed. Other alternatives for coloring utensils might include a food-friendly dye. The color will not be as bright, but that would make another great DIY project to give a try!
